Best Of 2017 playlist

Over on the Merryn Spotify account, I create weekly top 20 playlists featuring songs I have picked out from that week’s UK and Ireland releases. As it’s the end of the year, I have created a “Best Of” playlist, and I couldn’t get it any lower than 200 songs! It’s been an incredible year for new music from UK and Ireland artists, so if you like new music, take a listen!

Do you like to discover new music?

One of my side projects is Merryn Music where I interview unsigned UK and Ireland music artists every Monday for a feature I creatively called “Independent Music Monday”.

One of the other parts to Merryn Music is the Spotify account. Since Merryn Magazine launched in April 2016, I have been collating ‘new music’ playlists on the Spotify account. These are updated each week and I also have a playlist where I compile the 20 best songs of the week. These playlists feature UK and Ireland artists only.

There are now 300 songs (18 hours 30 minutes of music) on the February playlist:

There are over 300 songs on the March playlist:

I have added a new batch of songs to the Top 20 playlist, so if you fancy a listen, here’s the playlist! 🙂 (NB: I can’t get Naropa’s song off the playlist! I think it’s because it was removed from Spotify, my playlist starts with Brave Giant).

Do you know an unsigned UK artist or band?

One of the things I love to champion is unsigned UK artist and bands. With that in mind, I run a regular feature on the Merryn Magazine website on Mondays called Independent Music Monday where I interview a different singer or band each week. If you know of anyone that I should be featuring, please ask them to take a look at this webpage, as that will give them more information 🙂

Rick Astley’s back with new music!

To most people the name ‘Rick Astley’ means they got rickrolled and expected to see a completely different video. I’ve always been a big fan of Rick’s but then I was 9 years old when “Never Gonna Give You Up” came out, so I have happy childhood memories linked to Rick’s music.

Tonight I was listening to a Spotify playlist “Tomorrow’s Hits” while working when I heard a song I really liked. I took a look at who it was by, and it was Rick Astley! I didn’t know he’d released a new song. It’s really good and sounds nothing like his 80’s music.

I highly recommend having a listen 🙂

Ephemerals – You’ll Never See Me Cry

Why have I only just found this, it’s simply amazing. The singer has such an amazing tone to his voice.

Clearing out the CokeCanPoetry inbox for 2015, there are a few notable submissions we never got around to featuring — so this week (culminating in our year-end ‘best of’ list), we remedy this. One such instance is neo-soul group Ephemerals, who released their sophomore album chasin ghosts this past October. The UK act came together when musician Hillman Mondegreen met singer Wolfgang Valbrun while on tour in France with another project — an intersection which would eventually lead to the band’s formation and current identity as a seven-piece. For a sampling of their capabilities, listen to the soaring piano anthem “You’ll Never See Me Cry.” With soulful gems like this, let’s hope the group is longer lasting than their name would suggest.

I’m so behind musically!

I said on someone’s post earlier that I am so behind the times with music that it’s ridiculous. My job role changed recently so I can listen to headphones at my desk now, so I’ve been listening to Absolute Radio 00’s, which is like a new music radio station to me! Below are the songs I’ve only just discovered in the last month… (I know, my bad).

Song Of The Day: Ane Brun – One

Michael introduced me to this. He saw it on a documentary called Kennedy’s Nuclear Nightmare. Ane is from Norway and is a songwriter, guitarist and vocalist. She’s recorded eight albums since 2003 and I can’t wait to listen to more of her music 🙂

The Sunshine Award

sunshine-awardI have been nominated for the Sunshine Award by the lovely Tara at and I am so excited! It’s always such an honour to be nominated for an award by your peers 🙂

For the sunshine award, I have to list 11 random facts about me, then answer 11 questions given to me by Tara and then I’m supposed to come up with 11 questions for my nominees. Tara didn’t set me any questions, and I must admit that I’m the world’s worst question-asker. I usually think of things like, “what shoe size are you?” or “what’s your favourite biscuit?” so I’ll simply nominate the people who truly deserve this award, and let them ask their nominees questions if they like 🙂

11 random facts about me:
1. I’ve never watched E.T. and some people think that this is strange.
2. I love rollercoasters.
3. When I get the time (hahahahaha), I’d love to learn how to knit again. I could knit when I was 13 but I’ve totally forgotten now.
4. I’m very reluctant to wear anything other than ballet shoes which leads to wet feet in winter.
5. I once saw some stars from Emmerdale when I was working in retail and I was so starstruck that someone else had to serve them.
6. I can wear size 6, 7 or 8 shoes which makes it impossible for me to order them online.
7. One of the reasons I love winter is because I love to wear bright coloured tights 🙂
8. When it comes to alcohol, I love Malibu and coke or bacardi and coke.
9. If I won the lottery, I’d buy a holiday home in Brighton.
10. My favourite squash is Vimto.
11. I did so badly in my Maths GCSE that I had to re-sit it, and then got a worse grade. Fail.

So, to the nominees!
I love finding new music on WordPress and music has the power to make my rainy day sunny again, so with that in mind, I’m going to nominate the music blogs I love to follow 🙂

Song Of The Day: Tich – Dumb

I’ve just been introduced to a song called Dumb by a new singer called Tich. It’s so so so catchy and I think it’ll be a big summer hit. Tich is trying to get to number 1 in the UK charts today so if you like it, you can download it from

Here’s the video:
